Take a Bow : Critical reception

Critical reception

Bill Lamb from About.com stated that "Rihanna has the unique ability to deliver the lyrics without batting an eyelash, and this is another success, if a little lifeless, for the duo. Look for it to be Rihanna's 9th, yes 9th, top 10 pop single" and "The production [of the song] utilizes brief spoken asides by Rihanna to great effect. It's her "please!" and dismissive giggle that are likely to the muse one is betterbe the most memorable elements from this effort" he also adds "The keyboard-based backing of "Take a Bow" is, by now, standard Stargate and does not challenge their best. However, you are likely to find yourself singing along after the first few times through, and that should be enough right now to keep Rihanna in good graces with pop radio programmers".

Chuck Taylor from Billboard magazine reviewed the song and said: "With superstars Stargate and Ne-Yo at the helm, the velvety ballad ticks along with well-applied piano and strings, as the instantly recognizable singer delivers a convincingly bemused vocal, complete with haughty laugh". Nick Levine of Digital Spy wrote, "'Take A Bow' does what it sets out to do very well, but it's an underwhelming follow-up to the dancefloor rush of 'Don't Stop The Music'."

Take a Bow : Background and composition

"Take a Bow" is a pop/R&B song written and composed by Ne-Yo, Tor Erik Hermansen, and Mikkel Eriksen of Stargate, with whom she previously worked on "Unfaithful" and "Hate That I Love You".

The lyrics describe a female's point of view as her boyfriend is attempting to apologize after being unfaithful. She sarcastically tells him that his performance is "very entertaining", and to "take a bow" like he was performing on a stage. Although there is a gentle tone to the lyrics, at the heart of it they convey a tone of bitterness and even disgust. It is the second single with the same name to top the Billboard Hot 100 after Madonna's 1995 single "Take a Bow". "Take a Bow" is Rihanna's first song to peak at number 1 on BET's 106 & Park. In July 2008, on a promotional trip to the UK for his new album, Ne-Yo recorded a version of "Take a Bow" for Urban radio station 1Xtra. Taylor Swift has also been performing the song live on her tour.

Live performances : Disturbia

Rihanna opened the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards immediately following Britney Spears' introduction with Disturbia. The format of the music video was partially preserved with a 'thriller-esque' theme, with the zombie dancers present with lightstaffs. The performance was mixed with samples from 'Sweet Dreams' by the Eurythmics, and contained a rock solo break from the White Stripes song Seven Nation Army. Deleted scenes from the video were projected behind the singer.

Subsequently, Rihanna was interviewed on GMTV and performed the song again, as well as on "For One Night Only", "This Morning", and "Star Academy France". Following her performance on Star academy Fance, the album soared from #43 to #11 having a sales increase of 211%, peaking at #8 the following week, becoming Rihanna's first album to reach the top 10 in France.

Critical reception : Disturbia

The song has received positive reviews: Billboard magazine critic Jonathon Newan describes "Disturbia" as "a collaboration of lyrical genius with upbeat rhythmic cadence. By far it is Rihanna's most intuitive and self-honest song off Good Girl Gone Bad. More discotech and enjoyable than "Umbrella", and more extroverted than "S.O.S". It's a sure summer-topping hit."

Song information: Disturbia

The song was originally written by Chris Brown and his team known as the Graffiti Artizts and was considered for the re-release of his album Exclusive. However, Brown felt that the song would be better suited for a female singer; he then forwarded the song to Rihanna. Def Jam had considered saving the track for Rihanna's next album in 2009, because she had already recorded "Take a Bow" for the re-release of Good Girl Gone Bad. However, Rihanna and her team felt that the song was a summer single and needed to be recorded and released as soon as possible. The decision was finally made to release the song as the follow up to "Take a Bow".

The song follows in the footsteps of Rihanna's "Don't Stop the Music" by being a fast and upbeat pop/dance-rhythmic song. However, in contrast to the upbeat music of "Don't Stop the Music", it is lyrically dark in tone, and is about being in a confused state of mind, such as in schizophrenia and other pervasive mental illnesses.

On June 26, 2008, "Disturbia" debuted at number eighteen on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming Rihanna's highest debut on the chart to date, as well as her sixth top twenty from Good Girl Gone Bad. The next week, the song rose to the eleventh position, but experienced a drop to fifteen the week after, staying there for two additional weeks. However, the next week after the release of the video and a massive increase in sales and radio, the song jumped to number four, making Rihanna the sixth female singer (Madonna, Whitney Houston, Donna Summer, Mariah Carey and Ashanti being the other five) to have two songs in the top five concurrently, as her previous single, "Take a Bow", was at number two that same week. It is also her sixth Top 5 single on the Billboard Hot 100. The following week, the song reached number three, surpassing her other hit single, "Take a Bow". For the chart week of August 23, 2008, "Disturbia" knocked out Katy Perry's "I Kissed a Girl" to become Rihanna's fourth number one hit on the Hot 100 and held on the top spot for the week ending 30th August. It is her third number one from Good Girl Gone Bad: Reloaded, following "Umbrella" and "Take a Bow", staying at number one for two weeks so far. On July 29, 2008, "Disturbia" jumped to number two on the Billboard Hot Digital Songs chart, topping it in the following week. "Disturbia" then jumped to number one on Billboard Hot Digital Songs chart. Coincidentally, on both charts "Disturbia" has peaked on, it knocked off Katy Perry's single "I Kissed a Girl" from number one. On the issue date September 6, 2008 the song was knocked off by "Whatever You Like" by T.I.. It has also topped the Pop 100 chart knocking off Chris Brown's "Forever" from the top spot. It again reclaimed the top spot after being moved to number 2 by "Forever" for a week. For the Billboard issue dated 13th September, "Disturbia" topped both the Hot Dance Club Play and Hot Dance Airplay charts. Rihanna ties with Madonna for the most number of Dance Airplay hits, with a total of six.

In the United Kingdom, "Disturbia" debuted on the UK Singles Chart at number forty-seven due to digital sales. After the release of the music video, the song re-entered the chart at number forty-seven again and climbed to number thirty-four and number nine in the proceeding weeks. The song peaked at number three, from digital only sales giving Rihanna her eighth British top ten single. Although "Disturbia" hasn't and will not recieve a physical release the song rose back up the charts from number 5 to number 3. It spent 11 weeks in the UK Top 10 singles chart and holds the record for the biggest selling download only single selling over 300,000 downloads.

The song also debuted at number forty-five in Ireland, rising to number seven after the release of the music video. It has since peaked at number four for six consecutive weeks so far. In Switzerland, the song peaked at number eight on downloads alone, and in Croatia, the single topped the chart for 5 consecutive weeks. On the Canadian Hot 100, the song has peaked at number two.

In New Zealand, "Disturbia" became Rihanna's third number one single, and her first since "Umbrella". It is her fourth top five hit, and fifth top ten hit there from Good Girl Gone Bad, since "Hate That I Love You" peaked at number six and was certified Gold in its eleventh week with sales of 7,500+.[citation needed] In Australia, it has climbed to number six. The song was the most added song to Australian radio in its first week of major radio release. It was certified Gold on downloads alone before the physical release several weeks later, when it was subsequently certified Platinum. Disturbia topped the Turkey Top 20 chart for nine consecutive weeks, the longest runing number one in 2008 on the chart.

Disturbia

"Disturbia" is a dance-pop song written by Andre Merritt, Chris Brown, and Robert Allen for the re-release of Rihanna's third album, Good Girl Gone Bad Reloaded, and is the second single from the album, following "Take a Bow". The song was produced by Brian Kennedy with background vocals by Brown and Merritt. It was featured in a Circuit City commercial. On September 7, 2008, she opened the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards with a live performance of the song.

Background
The song was originally written by Chris Brown and his team known as the Graffiti Artizts and was considered for the re-release of his album Exclusive. Good Girl Gone Bad: Product and Theme

Following her second studio album, A Girl Like Me (2006), Rihanna started working with songwriters and producers early in 2007. Rihanna spent the week of the 2007 Grammy Awards with singer, songwriter and Def Jam label mate Ne-Yo for the follow-up. He had co-written her ballad-driven "Unfaithful", and she had vocal lessons with him for the new album. In addition to him, she collaborated with Evan and Carl, record producer Sean Garrett and Norwegian production team Stargate, with whom she had previously worked. Rihanna also booked Timbaland, will.i.am and J.R. Rotem in the studio to work with her. Most of the album tracks were recorded in Los Angeles, California, and, parallel to the recording sessions of her second studio album, A Girl Like Me, Rihanna was almost done recording late in February 2007.

Rihanna herself stated that the album is greatly inspired by Brandy's 2004 album Afrodisiac: "That album I listen to all day, all night. When I was in the studio that was the album that I listened to all the time and I really admired that every song was a great song. You could listen to the entire album. And I was like, 'You know what? I have to make an album like this'".

The genre of the new album is a slightly new direction for the singer, favouring uptempo dance numbers. It followed her club-natured melodies and, like its predecessor, includes R&B and ballads. In an interview surrounding the album's theme, Rihanna claimed, "You feel different every album, and [at] this stage I feel like I want to do a lot of uptempo [songs]. I want to keep people dancing but still be soulful at the same time."

During an interview on UK radio station Capital FM, Rihanna explained the meaning and reasoning behind the album title:

"Bad is not sleazy. Bad has its own term to every individual and in my case it just means I've gotten a little rebellious on the album, broken out of my shell and I'm taking risks... Michael Jackson "Bad" kind of way".

2009: Fourth Studio Album

On October 4th 2008 in an interview with All Music Rihanna confirmed that she is currently in the studio working on her fourth studio album. She stated that, "I'm currently working on record number four and I'm having so much fun. I'm having so many new experiences and meeting so many new people, it's amazing". Rihanna also stated that the album will head in a more Techno Rock direction saying, "I want this album to head in the same direction as Good Girl Gone Bad but with even more edge. The tracks will be less R&B influenced and will have a feel closer to that of, Disturbia, Shut Up & Drive and Breakin' Dishes". Rihanna also stated that she will be writing 3 tracks of the album herself and that they are quite different from her previous work and also stated that one of the tracks will fit into the punk-rock category". A release date for the album has not yet been announced.

Charity work

Rihanna created her Believe Foundation in 2006 to help terminally ill children. Rihanna has performed a number of concerts to raise funds for both charities and the Foundation. After her performances, she met children from the local charities, signing autographs and posing for pictures with her young fans. She explains her reasons for starting the Foundation, "When I was young and I would watch television and I would see all the children suffering, I always said: when I grow up, I want to help."

From taking time out for little acts of kindness, such as signing a games console for an auction benefiting Mission Australia, her commitment to helping children has extended to becoming a 2008 Cartier LOVECHARITY Bracelet Ambassador, performing at Madonna’s Raising Malawi fundraiser, and even using her fame to help a mother of two find a bone marrow donor.

In September, 2008, Rihanna joined other female pop/rock singers such as Carrie Underwood, Ciara, and Fergie for the anti-cancer campaign "Stand Up to Cancer" and its theme song, Just Stand Up!. The single is now available via iTunes.

2005–2006: Music of the Sun

2005–2006: Music of the Sun
Rihanna's debut album, Music of the Sun, was released on August 30, 2005, yielding two singles, the first being "Pon de Replay" which was released on August 22, 2005. This single became a huge success upon its release peaking at number 2 in the US on Billboard Hot 100 charts. It also became a global hit where it peaked within the top 10 across 15 countries as well as achieving top 20 chartings on 20 charts around the world. The single written by Carl Sturken and Evan Rogers was described by Rolling Stone magazine as a "poppy piece of dancehall reggae with slapping, syncopated beats recalling big-band jazz." However, despite "Pon de Replay"'s commercial chart success, the album itself was rated 2.5 out of 5 stars by Rolling Stone Magazine and described as lacking the replay value, ingenuity and rhythm of the single with "generic vocal hiccups and frills" of US R&B inflecting upon her "caribbean charm". Since its release, the album reached the top 10 in both US and Canadian charts, gaining gold certification from the RIAA from selling 500,000 units and subsequent platinum certifications for selling 2 million units in various other countries.

The second single "If It's Lovin' That You Want" was less successful than "Pon de Replay", but it became a hit nonetheless by managing to achieve a top 40 charting in the USA reaching a high of number 36. In Australia, Ireland and New Zealand the single proved to be well-received reaching the top 10 in those countries. Overall the single became a top 40 hit on 11 charts around the globe. Despite the album not having huge promotion and only releasing two singles Music of the Sun managed to sell over 500,000 copies in the United States and 2 million worldwide.

When asked about the nature of the album by AskMen Magazine about the album itself, Rihanna noted that it was released quickly after she was discovered in her home as a means of portraying her image as a girl from a small area who had moved to a large country in line with her debut, and that her second album was released somewhat shortly thereafter to illustrate that in her time in the country she had grown up quickly enough to release another album.

Rihanna's fourth single from the album, "Break It Off" featuring Sean Paul, had already climbed to number 45 on the Billboard Hot 100 based solely on airplay. Lyrics-Rihanna

Rihanna was born in Saint Michael, Barbados, to Ronald Fenty of Barbados and Monica Fenty, who is of Guyanese descent. She has two younger brothers, Rorrey and Rajad Fenty.

Rihanna went to Charles F. Broome Memorial School, a primary school in Barbados, and then on to the Combermere School, where she formed a musical trio with two of her classmates. In 2004, she won the Miss Combermere Beauty Pageant and performed in the Colours of Combermere School Show.

In 2003, at the age of 15, Rihanna received her big break when one of her friends introduced her to music producer Evan Rogers, who was vacationing in Barbados with his wife. Rogers, along with his partner, Carl Sturken, helped Rihanna record material in the U.S. which was sent to various recording companies. One copy of Rihanna's work was sent to Jay-Z, who eventually signed her to Def Jam Recordings.

Rihanna cites Brandy, Beyoncé Knowles, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Bob Marley, Madonna and her Caribbean background as major musical influences. Rihanna also stated in a recent interview that former Island Def Jam record label artist Fefe Dobson was someone whom she admired and looked up to, having a fellow artist writing, singing, and performing the music she truly loves.
